To Vote By Mail Using An Absentee Ballot:

Any Connecticut voter who wishes to vote by mail using an absentee ballot is permitted to do so if you meet certain conditions. For example, if you will be out of town for any part of Election Day or if you are caring for someone, you can qualify to vote by absentee ballot. Obtaining an absentee ballot is a multi-step process, however, so you need to plan ahead. This process is designed to be sure your vote is secure. Your Town Clerk can explain the details.

APPLY FOR ABSENTEE BALLOT

  • Go to your Town Clerk’s office. The Clerk has applications and can help you fill it out.

  • You can also download an absentee ballot application here.

  • You can apply for an absentee ballot now even if you have not yet decided whether to vote by absentee or in person.

  • When you receive your application, check a box for the reason you are voting absentee.

  • Make sure the address is correct for where you want your ballot mailed.

  • Return the application to your Town Clerk. You can do that either by:

    • Putting it in the secure Official Ballot Drop Box at your Town Hall

    • Mailing it back.

  • Be sure to return the application to YOUR Town Hall. You cannot drop your application in the Official Ballot Drop Box at a Town Hall different from the town you vote in.

WHEN YOUR RECEIVE YOUR ABSENTEE BALLOT

  • Town Clerks will start mailing absentee ballots out on Oct. 4 to those who have requested them.

  • If you get your application in after Oct. 4, the Town Clerk will process it as quickly as possible to get you your ballot.

  • When you receive your ballot package, you will see there are three parts to it:

    • A - the ballot

    • B - the inner envelope

    • C- a second envelope with a serial number and the address of your Town Clerk

ALL OF THESE ARE ESSENTIAL. DO NOT THROW ANY AWAY.

MARK YOUR BALLOT WITH YOUR ELECTION CHOICES

  • Make sure to completely fill in the ovals next to your choices.

  • Make sure you make a selection for every contest:

    • for U.S. Senate

    • for U.S. House of Representatives

    • for Governor

    • for Lieutenant Governor

    • for Attorney General

    • for Secretary of the State

    • for State Treasurer

    • for State Comptroller

    • for State Senate

    • for State Representative

    • for Probate Judge

  • Some candidates, like Maria Horn, will appear on the ballot more than once. She is running for the CT General Assembly as the endorsed candidate of both the Democratic Party and also the Working Families Party. Fill in only one oval next to her name and the party affiliation you prefer.

  • Black, felt-tip pens work best.

ONCE YOUR BALLOT IS COMPLETE

  • Follow the A, B, Cs to complete the process:

    • A - the ballot. After you make your selections, your ballot is folded and inserted into

    • B - the inner envelope. Sign and date the inner envelope where indicated. Insert the inner envelope B into

    • C - the second envelope. This envelope has a serial number on it and the address of your Town Clerk.

  • You must sign the inner envelope or your vote will not be counted.

  • You must put the inner envelope into the second envelope.

  • If your ballot is not enclosed in both envelopes your vote will not be counted.

  • Do not put more than one ballot in an envelope. If you and your partner are both voting by absentee, send each ballot in its own envelope.

RETURN YOUR BALLOT

  • You can return your ballot to the secure Official Ballot Drop Box at your Town Hall.

  • Do not put your ballot in the Drop Box of another town.

  • You can also mail your ballot to your Town Clerk.

  • Please allow time for the Post Office to deliver it.

  • All ballots must be received by the close of the polls at 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5.

If you have any questions about the voting process call your Town Clerk.
